When Should Young Children Start Seeing a Dentist..?

As a family and pediatric dentist in Arizona, one of the most common questions we get is “When should my child first see the dentist?” According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry the answer is by age 1. This may seem early, but it is important to find out the child’s risk of early childhood cavities, diet management for healthier teeth, and correct any hygiene problems. 1 in 4 children in the United States will have cavities by the time they are 4 years old.

Most babies’ first tooth erupts between 6-10 months old. At this time you should start caring for their teeth. A baby's teeth and gums can be gently brushed with an infant toothbrush and water. Prior to age 2, if toothpaste is used, you should only use a small smear and it should always be spit out after brushing. Teeth brushing for children age 2 and above, the amount of toothpaste should be pea sized. Teeth should be brushed for 2 minutes at a time at least twice daily.
